Finally some proper winter weather has been arrived to Westchester county. There is snow on the ground and the temperature stays below freezing almost the whole day. Great!

I was having a short walk outside late Sunday night. There was some -5 degrees of Celcius out there. Nice, crispy calm night. No wind at all and beautiful full moon. Hmm.. been long time since last time I tried to take a photograph of that bright ball on the night sky.

I went inside, took the photo bag from the closet, removed all that dust from the top and opened it. My good old prime lens of 300mm hasn't been touched for years, so it was time to put it back to work.

The setup

10D with 300mm lens10D with 300mm lensCamera is the old Canon 10D, some seven only megapixels thing. But still OK camera. The lens is Canon Ef 300mm f/4 IS L, "IS" standing for Image Stabilation. That would be important for the moon photography, to reduce the vibrations caused by the shutter movements.

Additionally, I stacked 1.4x and 2.0x extenders, wich are multiplying the lens focal length. Together with 10D's crop multiplyer, we have some effective 1400mm setup here!

Here you see the original image without any editing (just a thumbnail), so you can see how much I actually cropped the image.

Next mission is to capture bypassing jet planes rushing towards La Guardia airport. Of course the jackpot would be having a beautiful Airbus 320 or similar rendered against that full moon.. =)
